How to Fish in Rust: A Survivor's Guide to Aquatic Bounty

Fishing in Rust isn't just a relaxing pastime - it's a vital skill for survival and resource gathering.

I've spent countless hours perfecting my technique, and I'm here to share everything I've learned about how to fish in Rust.

First things first, you need a fishing rod. You can get one through missions, at fishing villages, or by crafting it yourself.

Don't forget to grab some bait too - forage for it, hunt animals, or check food crates.

Once you're geared up, it's time to choose your fishing spot.

Rust offers four unique fishing areas: Swamp, River, Ocean, and Underwater Lab Moon pool. Each has its own selection of fish, so pick based on what you're after.

Now, let's get to the actual fishing:

  1. Apply bait to your rod.
  2. Hold right-click to ready your cast.
  3. Left-click to throw your line.
  4. Wait patiently for a bite.
  5. When a fish bites, the mini-game begins. Use A and D to pull left and right, keeping the fish centered.
  6. Press S to reel in, but be careful - if the line gets too tense, it'll snap.
  7. Take breaks from reeling to prevent line strain.
  8. Keep at it until you land your catch!

Remember, different fish have different values. Sharks, salmon, and orange roughies are your cash fish - save these for selling at the fishing village for maximum scrap.

Trout can be reused as bait, while other fish are best gutted for resources.

For efficiency, try fishing in constrained spaces like the Underwater Lab Moon pool. It limits the fish's movement, making them easier to catch.

Just make sure the water is at least 4.5 meters deep to catch the valuable small sharks and salmon.

If you're after scrap, focus on catching and selling high-tier fish rather than gutting them. From my experience, an hour of solid fishing can net you around 1000 scrap if you play your cards right.

One last pro tip: use two rods and swap between them to skip the catch animation, saving precious seconds between catches.

Fishing in Rust is more than just a game mechanic - it's a skill that can make or break your survival strategy. With practice and these tips, you'll be reeling in valuable resources in no time.

Remember, patience is key, and there's always a bigger fish out there.
